Charles Ennis was part of a family with milling interests in the Hastings area. He and Joseph Ennis had a wheat elevator on the levee. Charles returned east about 1870 and died shortly thereafter.

H. B. Plant was an alderman elected in the City of Hastings in 1857 when the city was incorporated. He resigned March 1, 1858. He was also one of the incorporators of the Hastings, Mississippi River, Red River of the North Railway Company in 1857.

Together they formed the banking partnership of Ennis & Plant in Hastings. They ran regular advertisements in the Dakota Journal throughout 1857. Their office was in the Exchange Building on Second Street. Their operations appeared to be in liquidation by 1864. According to newspaper reports, the partnership endorsed notes of the Central Bank of Gray, Maine for circulation.
