Contemporary newspapers make no mention of the Merchants Bank, or the names James Thompson and James Foster that appear as signers. James Thompson, who was an organizer of the Bank of Stillwater, arrived in Minnesota several years after the purported issue date of 1854. It is likely that this bank was of dubious character. Plates were later altered to the names of fictitious banks in other cities and states.
