As early as 1854-55, Harvey & Broughton, and the following year Broughton & Andrews, kept small stocks of goods, groceries and supplies on the ridge on the north line” of Saratoga Township in Winona County. By 1862, H. E. Broughton was sole proprietor of his business in the village of Troy. By 1866, he partnered with Samuel Hyde (also an issuer of scrip) and operated Hyde, Broughton & Co. in the town of Fillmore.
