The Bank of Southern Minnesota evolved out of the early banking operations of Thomas E. Bennett dating back to 1855. Bennett, Samuel C. Porter, William Garlock and six other residents of Winona filed to organize the Bank of Southern Minnesota on February 3, 1863 with a capital of $25,000. American Bank Note Company engraved a 1-1-2-5 plate for the bank. A total of $40,356 in notes was issued, of which $636 was outstanding in 1868. Notes were redeemed at par.
The bank converted into the First National Bank of Winona, Charter 550, on August 20, 1864.
